WHAT IS 'THE UNION BLACK'? (ENGLISH)
The Union Black is a fresh new two-piece band based in Berlin (Germany), conceived by British artist-in-exile The Anté Dote (also of Djevara, Djevara (Redux), The Refuge, Anti-Mic : Micka Micka Micka & The Anté Dote) and completed by Robin Ketterer from Tannheim im Schwarzwald (also of Oliver Eves, Linus Cuno). The name originates from Anté's reflections on the unique and complicated relationship he and the other children of colonial subjects of the British Empire have with their country as it finds itself struggling to come to terms with it's post-Imperial identity and the corresponding decline in status and global importance, even as it is increasingly seduced by the simplistic but tantalizing appeal of neo-nationalist forces selling dreams of a return to an imaginary glorious past.
Anté, with over a decade's experience in the punk/metal/hardcore rock scenes, plays thunderous electric bass and guitar through a towering multi-amp setup and a sea of effects pedals, while drummer (and trumpeter!) Robin digs deep from his broad playing history and experience which spans jazz, alternative rock, orchestra and big band projects, to provide a backbone of powerful beats and enigmatic rhythym and percussion.
The duo have played well over 1000 live shows (and counting) between them all over the world already with their other projects, so have highly ambitious goals for this new act : to create huge, crushingly heavy, “riff-tastic” (yet) moving pieces with bounce, flair and verve, spread across an epic and diverse musical landscape, while borrowing and stealing from every genre imaginable (most enthusiastically hardcore punk and progressive metal as well as ethnic, drum n bass, and electronic dance music), all the while delivered with maximum artistic honesty, challenging dynamic creativity and devastatingly powerful live energy.
The Union Black aim to start playing their first live shows from the middle of 2019 onwards.
Navajo is the siamese twin of The Union Black, a band with exactly the same line-up and the same fundamental source material, but (re-)interpreted to make room for additional lyrics, vocals and a (slightly) more traditional approach to the tracks and performance. It will be developed in the background for now as the focus is on The Union Black, but is expected to appear in public some time probably after the first year of performances.
nb The whole concept together, encapsulating both bands, is referred to internally within the band as “The Navajo Project”.

/The Union Black/ ist ein neues, zweiköpfiges Bandprojekt aus Berlin, ins Leben gerufen vom britischen Exilkünstler The Anté Dote (Djevara, Djevara (Redux), The Refuge, Anti-Mic: Micka Micka Micka & The Anté Dote) und komplettiert von Robin Ketterer (Oliver Eves, Linus Cuno) aus Tannheim im Schwarzwald. Der Name /The Union Black/ hat seinen Ursprung in Antés Auseinandersetzung mit der einzigartigen und komplizierten Beziehung, die er und andere Kinder zu ihrem Land haben, die dem Kolonialismus des British Empire Untertan gemacht wurden. Besonders in einer Zeit, in der dieses ,,Empire“ ins Straucheln gerät bei der Auseinandersetzung mit seiner post-imperialistischen Identität und dem damit verbundenen Status- und Machtverlust im Weltgeschehen – und sich vermehrt einer stumpfen und doch verlockenden Anziehung neo-nationaler Kräfte hingibt, die mit wilden Versprechungen von der Rückkehr zu den ,,ruhmreichen alten Zeiten“ Anhänger ködern wollen.
Anté, seit über einem Jahrzehnt in der Punk/Metal/Hardcore Rock Szene zuhause, spielt einen donnerschlagartigen E-Bass und Gitarrensound, gesteuert über ein Wirrwarr aus Effektpedalen und verstärkt über ein turmartiges Multi-Amp-Setup. Der Schlagzeuger und Trompeter Robin, mit seinem großen Erfahrungsschatz aus Jazz, Alternative Rock und aus Orchester- und Big Band-Projekten, bildet mit seinen kraftvollen Beats und ungewöhnlichen Rhythmen den Unterbau des Duos. Die beiden Musiker haben bislang insgesamt über 1000 Live-Shows auf der ganzen Welt gespielt und wollen mit ihren neuen Konzerten das nächsthöhere Level erreichen: große, erdrückend schwere, rifflastige und zugleich dynamische und tanzbare Performances schaffen und einen epischen und vielschichtigen musikalischen Nährboden liefern, auf dem mit Bums, mit Flair und Enthusiasmus gebounct werden kann. Dabei wird heiter aus jedem erdenklichen Genre geklaut und geborgt (besonders gern aus Hardcore Punk und Progressive Metal, genauso wie aus Ethno-Techno, Drum and Bass und Elektro), nichtsdestoweniger mit maximaler Kunstfertigkeit, Ehrlich- und -einzigartigkeit.
Kurz: Ein ultra-dynamisches und explosives Kunst-Musik-Projekt, welches jegliche Kategorie von Live-Event sprengt.
The Union Black starten ihre Live-Tour ab Mitte 2019.
Ein weiteres Bandprojekt ist ,,Navajo“. Mit derselben Besetzung und musikalischem Setup wie The Union Black, will Navajo einen Raum schaffen für mehr Gesang, mehr Lyrics und eine etwas klassischere Song- und Performancestruktur. Zunächst eher im Hintergrund von The Union Black angesiedelt, soll dieses Projekt ab dem kommenden Jahr mehr und mehr bei öffentlichen Live-Shows etabliert werden. Beide Bandkonzepte vereinigen sich unter dem Titel ,,The Navajo Project“.
